Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao – a fantastic and electric duel

Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao

Neymar “showboating” last season

The lions of Bilbao are known for their pride and passion, and were, specifically, wounded last season, when suffering a heavy defeat by Barcelona in the final of the Spain’s Copa del Rey last year. Ironically played at Barcelona’s ground, the match was memorable first of all for some record-breaking whistling and booing of Spain’s national anthem (the king was in attendance, Basque and Catalan nationalist flags and insignia were supposedly banned but the separatists bad-boys got in early to make a point). On that occasion the Bilbao players resented the impish skills of Neymar as he double back-heeled the ball over one of their plodding defenders at the back. Barça were already up by a sackful and the gesture, although enjoyed by most neutrals, was taken as a tease too far by the the mercurial Brazilian. On that occasion the lions certainly moved in growling mauling and kicking, roared on by a baying crowd of Bilbao fans, clearly unaccustomed to seeing high skills displayed in front of them.

Ernesto Valverde has brought Atletico’s Raul Garcia to stabilize the defense this season. In players like Susaeta, Williams and Aduriz they have potentially dangerous one-off stars. However Barcelona are not unlino-like, you might say, and in stars like Suarez they have ferocious animals who can also show their teeth. Messi, Neymar, Iniesta and possibly Arda will also be reluctant to leave their pride at home.

Our Forecast For Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao

We think this could be one of those matches where Messi and co put it all together and deliver a round beating to Athletic. The Bilbao side do not seem strong enough at the back to withstand the full force of the Barcelona midfield and attack, even though Williams speed and skill will threaten the Barcelona defence. We expect a heavy defeat for Athletic Bilbao.
