UEFA Champions League Round of Sixteen – Second Leg
Can Arsene Wenger’s team take on the holders and Spanish Champions FC Barcelona ? Arsenal are trailing by what could be a decisive 0-2 defeat at the first leg at home. It was Messi who scored both on that night, although most woud agree arsenal did enough to get a point. Arsena, recently, have not fared well in crunch UEFA matches, and this second leg tie will be their biggest match of the season. With Barcelona set to field international stars Leo Messi, Neymar, Suarez and possibly Arda Turan and Iniesta this will be one of Arsenal’s toughest ever matches. Barcelona v Arsenal – A Champions League Classic Match
Barcelona and Arsenal have been no strangers in UEFA competition since their memorable final meeting in Paris 2006, won by Barcelona. Barcelona have certainly had the upper hand over Arsenal since then eliminating the North Londoners in 2011 (also in the round of 16) and in 2010 (when Messi scored 4 at the Camp Nou second leg to complete a 6-3 aggregate score).
Most football pundits expect this match to be on of a high calibre of football. The teams have similar open attacking styles of play where they focus more on attack that defence. Arsenal’s battery of stars, when on form are almost enough to match those of Barcelona (or Real Madrid for that matter) with players like Ozil, Sanchez, Giroud, Walcott and Wilshere potentially on display. That should make for a great match.

Our Verdict on Barcelona v Arsenal
In a match where both teams share a philosophy of open attacking play we’d expect excitement, skill and goals. When the draw was made some of the Arsenal players (many no strangers to big games at the Camp Nou) indeed seemed to relish the match, with top stars like Mesut Ozil pointing out Arsenal had no reason to feel intimidated by the Catalan masters. Arsenal have the skill to win this tie but still lack the emotional intelligence, especially in UEFA competition. They have shown this by crashing out early in the last 5 tournaments. We would therefore expect Barcelona to seal their place in the next round against Arsenal here at Camp Nou..
