Barcelona will have their chance for Champions League revenge on Atletico in this year’s UEFA Champions League quarter finals, as it was the red and whites who eliminated the Catalan masters under Tata Martino in season 2013-2014, the last time they met in UEFA. Barcelona were not firing on all cylinders at that time, and looked a tired team, about to relinquish both Spanish Liga and Champions to Madrid (Atletico and Real respectively). There was even talk of a jaded Messi and general feeling of dejection and “end-of-era” as the Barcelona players trudged off the pitch, eliminated, at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid. Barcelona Atletico tickets are always hard to find and this match will be no exception.
A lot has changed since then. Under Luis Enrique Barcelona have already claimed a triple of Champions, Liga and Cup (and World Club Champions Trophy). The arrival of Suarez has made this teams forward line unarguably the most potent ever in World Football. And with other first team appointments like Rakitic and Sergio Robert, Luis Enrique has blown away any vestige of a cobweb from the jaded team of two years ago. One man specially looking forward to this game will be Barcelona’s Turkish midfielder Arda Tura, the former Atletico man who was a key to Atletico’s victory two years ago.

This is such a compelling match because Atletico fans and neutrals alike know that Atletico can beat Barcelona. In La Liga this year Barcelona have prevailed over their Madrid rivals by the narrowest margin – 2-1 – on both occasions. In the last match Simeone’s team were arguably the more impressive of the two, opening the scoring with a wonderful goal by Koke, and with players like Griezmann, Juanfran, Gabi, Koke and Torres, they are capable of surprising Barcelona and winning this match.
